Seesmic Desktop Open API Facebook Stream Debuts, Color me Impressed.

I just installed Seesmic Desktop for Facebook and I felt compelled to write this brief review.

This new application from Loic Le Meur and Seesmic operates by utilizing the new Open Facebook API.
API stands for Applications Program Interface for my non tech friends. Facebook has opened up some of the data contained in its database. Data that we have collectively provided that is rich in the sense that it contains a lot of tags that can be utilized by developers to provide interesting groupings and subsets for analysis. These tags are called Metadata “data about other data”. There are quite a few really neat and impressive Mash-ups around that utilize this data to provide features that are stunningly complex yet visually simple.

I would Imagine this application will be available to everyone in very short order and it is a paradigm changer in many ways. This new application allows you to view and Interact in real time with two previously unconnected social media silos Facebook and Twitter. When you first download the application it asks you to enter your credentials for the accounts that you want to track through the application. Here is a Screenshot of the Facebook connect portion.

Once this data is pulled into the application you will then see a screen that looks like this.

After that you enter your Twitter credentials which brings you to this screen.

Now you have both applications contained within the Seesmic desktop application which you can now run in the background of your screen. The application has a built in notifier than pops up periodically telling you where the updates are coming from. You can  now click on your notifications, which will then take you to the actual Facebook application contained in a new window in your normal browser. Allowing you to interact with your friends activity stream by commenting and liking or posting additional links in response to their questions.

I have literally had this application for about 45 Minutes and I am sure there must be many features I have yet to discover. I will report back as I find them. First Impressions are usually lasting ones and I really like this new application. Thanks, Loic and Team Seesmic.

This Update was just posted to my FriendFeed. The best place I have found for Real Time news.
